First, a little bit about me:
I moved to Costa Rica from New Mexico in the United States specifically to work at La Paz. I've been teaching art K-8 for over 13 years and have taught many workshops, after school programs, and museum classes for children. It's my first time teaching IB, so we will be learning together. I look forward to working with you this year.
Week of August 29th- September 2nd
This week we will be looking at Tibetan mandalas and impermanent art. We'll be discussing and reviewing the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.
Week of September 5th-9th
Continue work on radial symmetry and our mandalas. Finish the drawing and work with markers, colored pencils, and maybe watercolors to finish the piece. Watch the creation of a Tibetan sand mandala on Youtube.
Week of September 12th-16th Artists who work for positive change in the world: JR, Vik Muniz
Check out the artist Vik Muniz and his movie "Wasteland" Finish mandalas. Begin chalk pastel still life. Homework: Bring in objects for still life. Homework Due 09/16- Finished mandala

Discussion/ critique: looking at our art. What Elements and Principles can you identify in your work? Why did you select the images and shapes in your mandala? Why did you select the colors? We will practice photo editing techniques in class on Friday.

Photography Assignment # 2- Due Friday, October 28th
Either use two photos from the last assignment, or shoot 2 new photos. The subject is your choice.
(* Photos must be taken by you)
- For each photo, manipulate 3 times. You may use different filters, change the contrast, the saturation, the brightness or anything else you decide to work with either directly on your phone or camera or edited on the computer.
- Send the photos to me on Google Drive including commentary about what you did to each photo, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If you change the contrast, or saturation etc. please write down what percent.
- To be clear, you will have 2 final photos, each manipulated 3 times for class next Friday

Artifact research project- As a class, you will be making a Google Slides presentation about early Native art in the Americas (before 1900). You will locate an object or a type of object that is interesting to you and create 1-2 Googles slides for the class presentation. On your page you will have an image and you will add information IN YOUR OWN WORDS WITH SOURCES CORRECTLY CITED. Museum websites are a great place to get started after you do an image search.
Here are some ideas for you to investigate:
Pacific Northwest of the US- totem poles, ceremonial objects (Haida,Tlingit,Tsimshian)
pueblo pottery of the tribes in the US Southwest (Zuni, Cochiti, Hopi, Acoma)
Kuna indians of Panama
objects found at Mayan sites of Tikal, Chitzen Itza, Monte Alban
Aztec artifacts in Mexico
Incan artifacts from Peru or Moche culture (tomb of Huaca Rajada)
Moai or petroglyphs from Easter Island, Chile
*When you do a search, add the word "artifacts" so you are able to find the older, authentic, traditional pieces, not copies or contemporary interpretations
• carry out research from a range of different sources (at least 2, not including Wikipedia)
• analyze the cultural contexts in which the selected pieces were created (talk about the time/place/ culture of the work)
• identify the formal qualities of the selected pieces (formal analysis using Elements and Principles)
• interpret the function and purpose of the selected pieces (why was it made? what was it used for? purpose within the society?)
*Must have a map or place name of where the artifact was found or the area where the cultural group lived, must have a reasonably *reliable date when artifact was created.
*Presentation must be in your own words (no copy and paste) with all sources cited
